INTERACTIVE LIGHT PROJECTION WITH PAINTING

By Gabriel Lecup & Colin McCallum

IRIS is a video-mapped painting installation that evolves with the viewer’s position in space. The painting uses fluorescent materials that react with specific colors that are projected from above. A system of “head-tracking” software translates itself according to the perspective of the viewer via the multiple colour variations projected. Every viewing can achieve a dynamic and customized experience from this unique work of art. The pigments used in the painting are chosen and mixed according to their properties of absorption and refraction of light.

Overlapping layers of repetitive geometric patterns, inspired by the digital imagery and technology which define contemporary life. The video-mapping is done using classic techniques and equipment. The programme links the position of the viewer with the colours via the projection and is designed to allow precise micro-variations. The system configuration must be adapted each time to the physical and optical conditions of the exhibition site.

IRIS is the result of a collaboration between the British painter Colin McCallum and French visual artist Gabriel Lecup. Their project is progressing and transforming with each new display.
